Guitar, the Australian Journey by Chris Johnson
Chris Johnson is a Walkley Award winning journalist of some two decades’ experience. While much of Chris’s reporting has been in the political realm he has maintained an output of musician interviews and concert reviews. He is a keen guitar player and collector.
Guitar, the Australian Journey will be presented as a blend of personal encounter, interviews, history and travelogue. The heart of the narrative is the author’s own journey with the guitar. From a young child handed his first six-string to teenage bands, acoustic ballads and a mature contentment derived from discovering more of what the guitar has to offer. It is written from the perspective of someone who is passionate about the instrument and it will connect with everyone who has ever played a guitar.
The narrative will feature a number of guitar makers around the country. Interviews with Australian musicians and luthiers are featured, along with accounts of inspiring performances where the guitar has played a prominent role. All styles of guitar music are explored – the variations of jazz, blues, classical, folk, country, rock and much more.
Stories of international artists who brought intriguing instruments to our shores and inspired our players also shape this work, with stories of Pete Seeger, John Lennon and Neil Young. Earlier accounts take the form of well researched historical commentary, while more recent events are told from the author's personal viewpoint.
Barrallier Books is now planning to publish Guitar, the Australian Journey. It will be a deluxe production supported by recordings of guitars.
